About The Florida Health Sciences Library Association was founded in 1961. The specific and primary purposes of the organization are to foster the development of medical libraries in Florida in accordance with professional standards, to inspire and educate medical library personnel, and to implement the exchange of library materials and services. Mission The mission of the Florida Health Sciences Library Association (FHSLA) is to promote and strengthen its members through professional development, advocacy and networking and to promote and advance access to information resources and services in support of quality health care in Florida. Dear Readers, This month's feature was received from Jessica Daly at the Clifford E. Graese Community Health Library in Orlando, FL. See below for her story about the innovative partnership between her library and the Seacreast Studio of Orlando Health-Arnold Palmer Children's Hospital. We welcome submissions about happenings from all member libraries. Please send submissions to fhslanews@gmail.com. -Best, Janet & Tim The Clifford E. Graese Community Health Library has partnered with the Seacrest Studio of Orlando Health - Arnold Palmer Children's Hospital to share the free health resources and services available to pediatric patients and their families. Through their partnership with the Ryan Seacrest Foundation, they launched a Seacrest Studio at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer. The studio enables a way to support our patients’ creative and artistic needs through radio, television, and new media. Orlando Health Arnold Palmer is one of only 11 pediatric hospitals in the U.S. — and the only one in Florida — to host an innovative Seacrest Studio location. Through this state-of-the-art multimedia studio, complete with sets, cameras, microphones and a soundboard, children and guests share the spotlight with musical and celebrity guests, as well as other patients and studio interns. Patients can also call down to the studio via their hospital room phone to engage in events they are watching on their screen. Jessica Daly, Consumer Health Librarian, was first asked to be a guest on the live weekday morning program which led to her being asked back monthly for her own 45-minute program. There are many different things done during the program such as trivia called "Are You Smarter Than a Librarian", sharing free online health resources, and reading children's books. During each session, Jessica shares her contact information and how she can assist and empower both patients and families with the health information they need most. We are co-sponsoring an MLA webinar with SFHSLC: Hospital Libraries: Challenges and Opportunities (1 MLA CE credit). If you have not registered, please see the flyer and link below for more information and to register.

My name is Susan Harnett and I will have the privilege of serving as your FHSLA President for 2021-2022. A little background on me: I am the Medical Information Services Librarian at Borland Library, University of Florida in Jacksonville. I have been at UF since 2016, and previously worked as a clinical librarian at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA; and Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, VA. I live in Ponte Vedra with my husband and three cats; my 22 year old daughter is a recent UF graduate starting her first job, and my 24 year old son works in IT Security. I would like to thank our outgoing President, Jaclyn Castek, for her leadership during these very unusual times, and Past President Tara Brigham for her invaluable assistance as I learn the ropes. I would also like to thank the members of the Executive Committee:
Some of our achievements this year were:
As a small (but mighty!) organization, we depend on talented volunteers to keep us moving. If you haven’t volunteered for one of our committees, feel free to contact me, or any of our executive board members to learn more about opportunities and upcoming projects. I look forward to working with everyone! Susan Harnett. President, 2021-2022 |
